There’s almost nothing like it.
That feeling you get sticking your hands into the dirt after a long cold winter. The smell of the soil and the sun on your face, you breathe and look up into that big, blue Alberta sky and it’s all worth it.
Now, I know we’re not quiet there yet, although it certainly looks like spring out there today.
But if you’re jumping at the bit to get out there and get dirty, the 2015 Calgary Home + Garden Show is exactly where you want to be this weekend. Every February I head down and see what’s up, what’s new and learn a thing or two.
Canada’s favourite home, horticulture and landscaping specialists will be joining forces with more than 650 exhibitors and features designed get you into the spring mood. And one of the coolest things at this year’s show will be workshops on how to build your own indoor mini garden terrarium.
A few weeks ago, I got a chance to get dirty with Blue Grass Nursery at a sneak peek for the upcoming show and, you know what? That little green globe is doing just fine thanks to their awesome advice. Great materials. Not too much water. The right plants.
And you can build your own too with their Contain Yourself: Terrarium + Miniature Garden Workshops. Running every day of the show experts from Blue Grass Garden Centre will demonstrate how to build your very own indoor gardens with compatible plants and materials from start to finish.
The workshop costs $40 and includes the supplies. It’s so nice to have that little bit of green sprucing up my office while I wait for the outside ones to popup once again.
I also got a chance to try my hand at making a garden pal with Interiors to Inspire. Their chalk paint is super fun and easy to use. Make sure you swing by their booth (1240) and see for yourself. I named him Jacque and I’m just waiting for the day to hide him amongst my monkshoods.
Other show highlights include the return of Food Truck Alley and Home Tweet Home – this year’s design challenge where young beneficiaries of Ronald McDonald House Southern Alberta have been invited to draw their dream house, then see it come to life as a birdhouse, thanks to the talents of Calgary’s top media personalities, designers and tastemakers. Each one is up for silent auction bids at the show with 100 per cent of funds benefitting Ronald McDonald House Southern Alberta.
