Loud music, great booze and fantastic flavors, Vancouver’s Hawkers Market is back, and this time to stay all summer.
Last month, a packed house greeted some of the new up and comers of the new entrepreneur food movement in Calgary. With names like the gourmet driven Braizen Food Truck, the raw food cooks of Yummi Yogis, the cool suds of Village Beer or the Asian styling of Eats of Asia, Hawkers Market has roared in to energize the local food culture and highlight the new blood by assembling them under a cool and unusual venue. And the foodies and wanna-be ones can even highlight their knowledge at the “Culinary Selfies” food photo booth setup with pro photographer Tieran Green. What better way to show your foodie experience by helping to perfect your shots for Instagram.
Back again this month, and at least once a month all summer, they’re back to prove a point and show that there is so much more than anyone imagined. And as for the location? One that’s totally unexpected as well. Chris Jerome, the mind behind the Hawkers said, “Theatre Junction Grand is the perfect venue for Hawkers, featuring exposed brick and partially demolished concrete it looks and feels underground. Hawkers will be taking over two floors of the space and filling it up with food and music by Calgary’s Bass Bus team led by Baran Faber.”
But that’s just the start. Popular Top 40 under 40 cool treats star James Boettcher of Fiasco Gelato has a heck of a an announcement at this upcoming one. “Get luck with Taiko Taco at their exclusive launch!” this Saturday at Hawkers Market. They will be serving up Asian style tacos, so expect some fusion with these and some surprises.” Also hailing all the way from Vancouver, Hawkers collaborator Electric Jelly Doughnuts is coming in with an interesting do it yourself doughnut bar where diners can fill, dip and glaze their own custom doughnut. With the Taiko Taco, two new food vendors launch as well, WRKSHP and AAA Oyster.
Tickets are available only in advance of the market none at the door so grab them fast the last market was a sell out. Tickets can be bought at hwkrsyyc.eventbrite.ca for $10/cover. Jermone says for people to expect “a LOT of food and an AWESOME time” so come hungry. In the meantime, keep an eye on the Hawkers Market twitter feed, website or on Facebook to find out when’s the next one, and here’s Jerome’s Top 10 for Calgary foodies to look forward to:
