Summer is a great time to shake things up in your life, and that includes your yoga routine. Whether you are beginner or a life-long yogi, embracing all that summer has to offer is to breathing new life into your practice.

Local yoga teacher Sophie Dufresne says that simply taking your practice outside is a great way to inject some fun into it. This can range from a studio class taken outdoors, to standup paddleboard yoga, to a solo practice in your backyard or on a beach while on vacation.

“Make it playful. If you are going to take it on the grass or sand, you can tumble with less chance of injury. Serious, but playful.”

Dufresne says the only downsides to outdoor practice are the same as any other outdoor activity. When the sun is out, wear a hat, throw on some sunscreen and drink plenty of water. Even better, try to fit your practice in the early morning or later on in the evening to avoid the effects of the sun.

You might find yourself debating about whether you have the time or energy for yoga practice. Dufresne says that doesn’t matter whether you are a hiker, golfer, tennis player, climber, swimmer, you are going to benefit from yoga.

“Our practice prepares us for [activities] by bringing balance, strength and stability to the body,” says Dufresne,

“It is going to make everything you do better.”

You can learn more about Sophie Dufresne and take part in one of her classes (she recommends the one at the Calgary Canoe Club on Tuesdays and Thursdays) at www.yoga-sophie.com.
