With the Calgary Stampede well underway, there have already been tough acts to follow within the first couple of days. The Calgary Stampede is known for bringing the most up to date art, vendors, rides, and even a $100 hot dog. However, this year music has been a top priority for the Calgary Stampede and it all began on Thursday evening on the Coca Cola Stage. Several acts from around Canada hit the stage for the first annual Beat Drop Fest. Performers included local duo Beach Season, Edmonton’s Tennyson, DJ Pat Lok from Vancouver, Toronto’s DJ Cyclist and 2014 Red Bull Thre3style Canadian champion DJ C-SIK. With the warm weather and electronic vibes the musicians all brought a crowd that couldn’t resist taking in the abundance of music to their ears.
Headlining the night was brother and sister duo Tennyson who definitely took the night to a whole other level. Comprised of Tess on the drums and production by Luke, the two performed a series of their own songs with a James Blake meets Cashmere Cat feel. The two started working on music at the ages of 7 and 9 and have not stopped since, creating 2 jazz albums by the time Luke was 12. In 2012, Luke released his first single in the electronic genre and has brought his sister for the ride now incorporating her drum patterns on top of his beats. “You’re Cute” (which is featured here), one of their top recognized singles, actually caught the attention of Canadian producer Ryan Hemsworth who has been making waves internationally. With such a strong, distinct style this will not the be the last we hear from the dynamic duo.
With a full week of the Calgary Stampede still remaining, there are definitely shows that will be newsworthy. On July 12 Calgary welcomes the legendary Stevie Wonder to the Scotiabank Saddledome for an almost sold out concert. For more information please click here.
